What’s The Difference Between Mixing & Mastering?

Are They The Same?

Though they seem the same and even use the same tools, mixing and mastering are two entirely different processes that require a different set of skills.

Mixing involves working with all of the instruments in the song and blending them together to sound great. From the vocals to the drums, every instrument is fine tuned to get it sounding just right and in pocket.

Mastering is the final step of polishing the song into a record that is both loud, and sounds good on every speaker you play it through. Unlike mixing, the mastering process works on the overall sound of the song, and not individual instrumentals.

A good way to think about it is how your car lets your boost the bass or treble in your song.

When To Get Mixing Vs Mastering?

If you already recorded all of your tracks and have your beat stems/mp3, the next step for you would be to get them mixed and ready for mastering.

If you have a full song already completed, mixed, and sounding good, your next step would be to get your song mastered and ready for release!
